Second Hand Smoking – You can get Lung Cancer

by editor on April 7, 2010

Nowadays, I have known a lot of people who had develop a lung cancer but yet, they did not puff even one stick of cigarette in them. I have known a person who passed away at the age of 51 but never smoked even just a day in his life. How did this thing happen?

It is no longer a viable option for the complacency of non-smokers who have shared over the years. Smokers and Non-smokers are basically just the same and are vulnerable to all kinds of diseases which are somewhat incurable. Based on clinical studies, only 14% live five years after their diagnosis among patients with lung cancer.

You will have to think about the things on what to do to protect ourselves in the face of a devastating disease that seems to have neither rhyme nor reason. What you can do is to first asses your risk from lung cancer then look for some precautionary measures to prevent the disease.

RISK FACTORS FOR LUNG CANCER

Based on medical studies, women are more vulnerable to lung cancer. Research has shown that females are more inclined to the cancer-causing chemical that is found in cigarettes. In another study, a gene linked to abnormal lung cancer cell growth was known to be more prone to women than in men.

GENDER: Based on clinical studies, unfortunately, women seem to have more risk and prone to lung cancer. Research has showcase that female smokers are more vulnerable to chemicals that can cause cancer which is practically found in cigarettes. In a different study, a gene that is related to abnormal lung cancer cell growth was reportedly more active in women than in men. It doesn’t really matter whether the women smoked or not.

HISTORY OF LUNG CANCER IN THE FAMILY: Evidence has shown that there exists a lung cancer gene that predisposes offspring to acquire a lung cancer. However, the evidence is a bit far from conclusive as the situation is made hard by the fact that offspring of smokers have a greater risk of getting the said disease.

BLEMISHING FROM PAST LUNG DISEASE: Scarring found in lungs that caused by tuberculosis or any other lung diseases can trigger lung cancer and develop in no time.

SECOND HAND SMOKE: Engaging in second hand smoke has been shown to be a visible risk factor. The risk is always increasing by approximately thirty percent from everyday exposure to second hand smoke. This is probably the most vital risk factor for lung cancer in non smokers.

EXPOSURE TO RADON GAS: Radon is known to be an odorless gas that can seep out of the grounds into buildings. In worst case scenario, the gas can seep from the grounds into water that is near residential communities. Radon Gas has been proclaimed as a potential cause for lung cancer.

AIR POLLUTION: An exposure to diesel fumes in long term may increase the risk in lung cancer by 47%. Air pollution in particular is considered to be a risk factor in the general population. It was estimated that as many as one in ten cases of lung cancer may be caused by air pollution in the capital city of Sweden which is Stockholm.

PAST CANCER TREATMENT: Suspicion is that radiotherapy in the chest area may put the lungs into more risk on acquiring lung cancer. Researchers in Sweden who glanced at the medical records of 145,000 patients who have breast cancer found that there was an increase of lung cancer 5 to 20 years after the treatment of breast cancer.

ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT THERAPY: Based on clinical research at the University of Pittsburg, the substance called estrogen can fuel the growth of non small-cell lung cancer.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES THAT CAN BE TAKEN

DIET: Truly indeed that an apple a day, may keep lung cancer away. Based on Finnish studies, it is known to man that apples not only keep doctors away, but supplements protection for the lungs as well. This study is found that people who ate the most apple is less likely to acquire lung cancer. Some of the studies suggest that lung cancer risk is a little lower among smokers and non smokers who take at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis.

BETA CAROTENE: One of the ways to lower your lung cancer risk to high intake of beta carotene compounds. Studies also show that beta carotene is only effective when the compounds are ingested from the whole foods such as peaches, melon, mangoes, carrot, squash, etc. The opposite effect seems to take place with beta carotene supplements. It was known that 18% lung cancer cases and concerns among heavy smokers who took beta carotene supplements. However, National Cancer Study on the effects of Vitamin A and beta carotene was stopped because smokers who are taking the supplements had 28% more lung cancer than those taking a placebo.

VITAMIN C AND SELENIUM: Proper intake of selenium substance on a long term basis has been reported to decrease the risk of having a ling cancer. In one study, people who taking 55-200 mcg of the mineral on a daily basis had a 46% lower rate of lung cancer. On the other hand, people who take less than 90% mg of Vitamin c everyday may have a 90% higher risk of lung cancer than those who are taking 140mg or more.

Try to prevent second hand smoke and better check your house from Radon. We all know that there are no guarantees in life; however, it makes sense to take some preventive measures because it’s not as bad at all and it will also improve your overall quality of health and life. More importantly, it will prevent lung cancer.
